Mahmoud Khalil to Speak at Tribute to Dr. Abu Safiya
"Courage Award 2025"
Mahmoud Khalil, the recent Columbia University graduate who became the symbol of those President Trump wants to drive out of the U.S. because of their opposition to Israeli genocide, will speak Saturday, November 22 at 3 p.m. at the Palestine Museum US during the tribute to Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, whom Israel abducted in Gaza in December 2024. Link for tickets will be up this week. Money raised will fund a campaign to free Dr. Abu Safiya and other medical workers abducted or imprisoned by Israel. .

Another speaker will be Dr. Karameh Kuemmerle one of the co-founders of Doctors Against Genocide. The group was founded in 2023 by a coalition of healthcare professionals who wanted to unite their voices in uproar against the genocide in Gaza. Dr. Karameh Kuemmerle is a pediatric neurologist and epileptologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Mahmoud Khalil was born to Palestinian refugees in Syria, took part in demonstrations for freedom, but he had to flee when repression became murderous. He graduated college in Beirut and completed his master's in public administration at Columbia. In spring 2024, Khalil emerged as a negotiator and spokesperson during the Gaza Solidarity Encampment. This year the Trump Administration targeted him and even though he had a Green Card and no convictions for any crime, Trump's people tried to deport him. Khalil was jailed in Louisiana but is currently freed on bail. He'll give his tribute to Palestinian doctors and will talk about the difficulties students faced standing up for human rights in 2024, his treatment by ICE and his continued persecution, and what students are doing now to support Palestine.
